Cleaning a Metal Trash Can

metal trash canEvery now and then you need to clean out the metal trash can that you have in your office.  And by clean, you should not only toss out the trash on a regular basis, but you should clean the can every so often.  Not only will this extend the life of your trash can, but it will also help get rid of any lingering odors that might emanate from the trash can itself.  You are going to need bleach or ammonia, water, a long handled brush, paper towels, and rubber gloves to clean the metal can.  With these on hand, here are the steps to clean the can:

  1. Empty out the trash can and then rinse it out with water.  Once that is done fill the can about 1/3 or 1/4 full of hot water.
  2. Add either bleach or ammonia to the water.  Do not add both as this will create a noxious mixture.  Let the mixture soak in for about 30 minutes or longer depending on much you need to clean it.
  3. Use a scrub brush to clean the surfaces.
  4. Be sure to clean the lid as well.
  5. Get rid of the liquids and dry the can with paper towels.  You can also place the can in the sun to dry it out.
  6. Make sure it is completely dry before you use it again.
