• Park Avenue: This Upper East Side eatery (bet you’ll never guess which avenue it’s located at) doesn’t have just one Zagat-rated decor scheme–it changes the interior design with each season along with the menu. For example, in autumn, Park Avenue adopts a Pacific Northwest ambiance with animal hides, walnut veneers, mirror strips along floor-to-ceiling wall panels, leather mesh and over 250 copper-clasped rope segments creating a central ceiling fixture. • Monkey Bar: Perfectly evoking New York’s speakeasies of the Roaring Twenties and subsequent depression, Midtown’s Monkey Club has sat at the ground floor of the Hotel Elysée since before the repeal of Prohibition. • Asiate: Located on Columbus Circle in the Upper West Side, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is one of the most luxurious hotels in the city, and it has a restaurant to match. The Asiate, located on the hotel’s 35th floor, looks over the picturesque Central Park with views of the surrounding skylines. The interior isn’t too shabby in its own right, however. The dining room is brightly lit with a large and elaborate lighting fixture, all the better to see the gold and metal design scheme which earned the restaurant a 29 out of 3o in Zagat’s decor ranking.
• Megu: Found in the United Nations Plaza, the Japanese restaurant Megu features a modern but Feudal Japan influenced decor centered around a giant bonshu, or temple bell, that weighs over 800 lbs. and hangs suspended from the ceiling over a Buddha ice sculpture. Elsewhere, you’ll find traditional murals, bonsai trees and plenty of other surprises in the dim, gold and red interiors.

• Eddie Murphy: Released in 1983, Eddie Murphy’s HBO special Delirious immediately turned Murphy into the biggest stand-up comic in the country. It was equally notable for Murphy’s ultra-profane material as well as what he was wearing while he delivered it: a form-fitting red leather suit. Murphy’s bombast was rewarded when the special was a hit, and he followed it up four years later with the concert film Raw, in which he wore an even more audacious purple and black leather suit.
• Batman: In recent years, plenty of superheros have traded in their polyester jump suits for full leather, but the caped crusader may have been the first. In Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, Michael Keaton ditched Adam West’s stretchy grey costume for an all black leather look that’s been the standard for Batman, and other heroes, ever since. It also bears mentioning one of Batman’s most frequent foes has been rocking full leather since Batman‘s sequel in 1992: Michelle Pfeiffer replaced Julie Newmar’s sparkly black outfit for a full leather bodysuit.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, with the varying proportions of each creating a range of properties. It has been in use since prehistoric times, but by the Roman Empire, brass was being deliberately produced from metallic copper and zinc minerals and used for currency and military armor and equipment.

During the Middle Ages, brass was being used to make art and practical tools across much of Europe and Asia. One early example of brass casting is the baptismal font at St. Bartholomew’s Church in what is today Belgium, an example from at least the early 12th century.

Today there are many different kinds of brass with various appearances and uses. Red brass is also known as gunmetal because it was primarily used in the manufacture of guns. Nordic gold is often used to mint currency. Gilding metal is a soft brass used for making bullet jackets and artillery shells. And high brass has a high tensile strength, so it’s commonly used for springs, screws and rivets.

Interestingly, despite its natural abundance, aluminum has no known function in biology. It is tolerated by plant life and animals but it doesn’t seem to be used by any of them. Instead, the only animals who have found a use for aluminum are humans, who have been employing aluminum’s benefits for millennia. The ancient Greeks and Romans, for example, used aluminum salts to dye and for astringents in dressing wounds. A process for creating aluminum metal was first created in 1825 by Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted. Before a production process was created, aluminum was incredibly difficult to extract, which made pure aluminum more valuable than gold.  Even in 1884, when 100 ounces of aluminum were used to create the capstone of the Washington Monument, aluminum was as expensive as silver.

Copper has been mined and utilized for thousands of years, even as far back as the 10th century BCE, the date of a copper pendant found in northern Iraq. The Old Copper Complex refers to the Native American societies that used copper for weaponry in tools from the 5th century BCE. And in the Roman Empire, it was mined from Cyprus, giving it the original name cyprium, or “metal of Cyprus.” The Romans often used nuggets of copper as currency before using the material to mint coins.

Today copper continues to be used in wires and cable, electronics, architecture and utensils. • Johnny Strabler’s Leather Jacket (1953): In the hit 1953 film The Wild One, Marlon Brando leads a group of outlaws called the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club who, true to their name, all don black leather jackets while they cruise around California. Brando’s look and performance became a true cultural touchstone of the era.
• Michael Jackson’s Red Leather Jackets (1982): Michael Jackson’s 1982 LP Thriller is often considered his greatest work, not to mention the best selling album of all time. That probably owes a lot to Jackson’s unimpeachable songwriting of the era as well as Quincy Jones’ top-notch production, but it might also have to do with the music videos which were early hits of the MTV era. Among them: “Beat It,” which saw Jackson dancing in an iconic red leather jacket with a silver shoulder, and the title track, a short film in and of itself where Jackson, in another red leather jacket, becomes a lycanthrope, much to the dismay of his date.
